THE internet search habits of Australians have revealed a growing taste for Thai, Chinese and Japanese food, according to a study by Sensis.
The company recently analysed millions of searches performed on sensis.com.au, between August 2004 and February 2005, in the category of bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
Sensis general manager John Cussen said the study demonstrated the growing popularity of international cuisines over traditional Australian foods.
“Australians who search the internet are favouring cafes over pubs, Thai over fish and chips and lattes over beer,” Cussen said.
The study found that pizza was still a favourite among Australians and McDonalds continued to dominate the fast food category.
Jack Daniels also proved popular - ranking higher than mixed drinks such as Ruskis and Bacardi Breezers.
The study also revealed that more Australians searched for coffee than wine, beer or other beverages, while home-made chutney and cinnamon oil were also popular.
Sensis also said the term restaurant ranked “incredibly high” in the search results, however it would have ranked higher if it were spelt correctly—in fact it is listed five times in the top 100 search terms, spelt five different ways.
